Technology for improved vision and comfort

Thin & Lightweight

New hi-index materials mean that your lenses can be made thinner, lighter and better looking. This is especially good news if you have a high power prescription. No longer will you need to wear thick unsightly lenses and have your choice of frames restricted, so enhancing your overall appearance.

Varifocals

If you require both near and distance vision correction, then you are probably presbyopic. This is a natural condition which many people experience in their mid-forties onwards.

One solution is to have different pairs of spectacles for reading and distance vision, but this can be inconvenient. Another option is bifocals, but they have a sudden change in focus and an obvious line across the lens.

Varifocal lenses are an increasingly popular alternative. Because they have a gradual change in their optical power there is no jump between near and distance vision. As a result, varifocals give you better middle distance focus as well as looking more attractive without the dividing line of bifocals.

Our varifocals come with a 60 day no quibble guarantee.  If you can’t get used to them you can swap them to bifocals or separate distance and near spectacles.

Coatings

Most lenses can now have a special coating applied which enhance your vision as well as improve the appearance of your spectacles.

  • Scratch-resistant
Most peope choose plastic lenses because they’re lighter than glass and less likely to break. But plastic scratches more easily than glass. So to prolong the life of your lenses, we recommend a scratch-resistant coating.
  • Anti-reflection
An anti-reflection coating wirtually eliminates the light relfected from the surface of the spectacle lenses. This has several important benefits. First, you will look better when wearing your glasses because there are no distracting reflections to get in the way of normal eye contact. Secondly, a reduction in reflected light can improve your vision and reduce eyestrain. For example, an anti-reflection coating helps reduce headlight glare when you are driving at night. It is also recommended for use with computer screens.
  • Tints and UV filters
Excessive exposure to the sun’s ultra violet rays can be harmful to your eyes and may cause long term damage. If you are at risk then a UV filter coating for your lenses is advisable. A wide choice of tints are also available to reduce the amount of light reaching you eyes to make your vision more comfortable.
  • Multi-coated lenses
Increasingly popular are multi-coated lenses. These combine anti-reflection, scratch-resistant, water-repellent and UV coatings to give you excellent lens performance, durability and safety.

Light Sensitive

if you’re sensitive to bright light or don’t want to switch between spectacles and sunglasses then the photochromic lenses are ideal. These darken according to the amount of sunlight so you can enjoy comfortable vision both indoors and outside. The latest generation of fast changing photochromic lenses are made of lightweight plastic and can be fitted to a wide selection of fashionable frames.

Polarised

Bright sunlight produces reflected glare from roads, water and snow. this can lead to eye strain, headaches and poor concentration. Although ordinary sunglasses reduce brightness, only polarised ones cut out the reflective glare ro give you a superior clarity and more comfortable vision. Our quality polarised lenses are particularly suitable for driving, water activities, beaches, skiing and fishing.

Computer

If you are regularly use a computer and experience eye strain, you may benefit from spectacles designed for VDU use, Under European legislations you could be entitled to an eye test and VDU glasses paid for by your employer. We’ll be happy to give you further details of this scheme.

Testimonials:

Recently had to change optician as my usual one was bought out by Vision Express. I used David Dowley in Acomb and was pleased to be treated with good old fashioned regard and attention. The eye care was flawless in my opinion, and all information that I needed, was presented in an un-rushed manner with due consideration. I give this top marks for my experience of an optician.
